KUNSTHAUS GRAZ, AUSTRIA

This modern-art museum in the city of Graz is a crazy blowfish of a building, a bloated octopus tentacle with suckers for skylights, set amid the baroque rooftops and turrets of the old town. Its British architects, Peter Cook and Colin Fournier, describe it as a ‘biomorphous construction’; others have called it a prime example of ‘blobitecture’. Certainly, the museum seems almost alive, partly because – like some creature of the deep – its skin can create changing patterns and emit light. The blue outer membrane is studded with lamps, which can be programmed to display animated images that call to mind a 1980s games console.
